Hope for Children, Chance for Childhood (local partner)

Why is the project needed?

Children attending the Surdhashan Preschool come from impoverished families who face multiple challenges, including drug abuse, debt, sex work, and imprisonment of family members. These children are at high risk of malnutrition and lack access to basic education. The project aims to give them the foundation they need for emotional growth and educational development.

About the Project

The Moratuwa Social Service Society operates the Surdhashan Preschool, providing early-childhood education and social development for 22 pupils from families living in extreme poverty. The programme supplies milk, lunch, books, and uniforms to the students, while also covering some operational costs of the preschool. Children attending the school are regularly weighed and monitored for malnutrition, as many come from families with limited access to nutritious food.

Goals and Objectives

Provide early childhood education and social skills development for 22 children from families in poverty.

Supply daily meals, books, and uniforms to ensure the children’s well-being and educational success.

Address malnutrition through regular health monitoring and food provision.

Our impact so far

22 pupils receive daily meals, education, and regular health monitoring, which helps mitigate the effects of malnutrition.

The programme provides these children with a safe space for early childhood development, offering opportunities they would not otherwise have.
