Why is the project needed? 

Street-connected children, especially those with disabilities, often face significant barriers to accessing education. These include lack of support in schools, unstable home environments, and limited services tailored to their specific needs. Children in conflict with the law face additional risks, often being excluded from school altogether. Without targeted support, these children are more likely to fall further behind. This project addresses these challenges by offering tailored assistance, improving family environments, and advocating for better policies to ensure these children can access inclusive education and stay in school.

About the Project

The LEAP (Learning, Educating, and Protecting) project provides direct support to street-connected children with communication disabilities and special educational needs in Kisumu, Kenya. These children face unique challenges that are not adequately addressed by existing services. Through personalised, one-on-one support from trained learning assistants, the project helps children re-enter school and continue their education. It also supports children in conflict with the law by providing basic education and preparing them for reintegration into mainstream schools.

Goals and Objectives

Improve School Achievement: Help 340 street-connected children and 60 children in conflict with the law improve their academic performance and stay engaged in education.

Strengthen Family Environments: Support 240 parents in creating safe, positive home environments that prioritise their children’s education and well-being.

Increase Knowledge and Awareness: Work with service providers and government agencies to raise awareness and provide evidence that shows the importance of inclusive education for street-connected children.

Our impact so far 

Improved School Achievement We have helped 4,458 children improve their school performance and engagement in education.

Strengthened Family Environments We have worked with 960 parents to create positive and supportive home environments that focus on safeguarding and learning.

Increased Knowledge and Awareness We have reached 2,500 service providers and government officials, raising awareness and promoting inclusive education for street-connected children.
