We have some very exciting updates about our work in Rwanda and how your donations are helping to transform the lives of deaf children.
We are working with Empowering Children with Disabilities, a local organisation running the Nyabihu School for Deaf Children. Set up in 2013, this school is the only one of its type in the district. We teach children the national syllabus, along with sign language and lip reading (in English and local Kinyarwandan) to help them communicate better with their peers. It gives deaf and hard-of-hearing children a unique chance to get an education, and brighter prospects for the future.
In 2015 the school received the devastating news that it would be demolished due to the government’s road expansion programme. But thanks to the amazing support of the Team Abana and Think Money Group we managed to raise enough to build a brand new school
Phase one of the build is now complete and one of two dormitory blocks have been fully constructed. Next we are constructing the second dormitory, classrooms, reception, canteen, composting toilet and shower block. Needless to say, it’s a very busy time and we are extremely excited with the progress being made and wanted to share a sneak preview with you! Read more about our work in Rwanda.
