It has been one year since you helped to open the drop-in centre, providing critical support for children on the street of Mombasa
In that time your donations have helped to achieve amazing things for children who need it most. Over 1,200 children have found safety at the centre over the past 12 months. It has been a place of respite, where children can escape the horrors of the street and build trusted relationships with adults. You have helped provide over 61,000 hours of safety through counselling sessions; first aid; educational catch-up lessons; and volleyball, boxing and football sessions where children can have the freedom to play without fear.
The specialist centre is the only one of its kind in Mombasa. Your support has been a lifeline to children like James. James was just 8 years old when he found himself living on the streets, alone and with no one to turn to.
“Life on the streets was difficult, I was arrested and taken to jail. I struggled to find money for food or somewhere to shower. I was sleeping on boxes and when it rained, I would get sick. Life on the streets is not good. I felt that I wasn’t meant to be living the life I was in.”
As one of thousands of street-connected children in Mombasa, James was at risk of human trafficking, abuse and child labour.

That is when your support made a difference. Your donations meant that our local partner, Glad’s House Kenya were able to step in: “They would come and run football sessions for kids living on the street. That’s how I was introduced to them.” At the football session, James met some of the team’s specialist Outreach Workers. They listened to James, they created a personalised support plan and showed him that he could build a life away from the streets.
“Glad’s House has helped provide a place to study, food, and clothing. I feel a lot more positive about life now. When you have a problem, they will listen and will help you figure it out. Even if you are having trouble at home with family, they can help. If it weren’t for Glad’s House Kenya, I would still be living on the streets right now. Now, I feel safe, like there are people taking care of me and if anything happens, I know they will help me.”
James
James has moved back home with his family and is looking forward to the future. “I have many hopes and dreams in life. I want to grow up and help my family and educate those living on the streets so that they can also change.” Glad’s House Kenya helped James to turn his life around. Your donations are providing critical support to Glad’s House Kenya who are transforming the lives of hundreds of children like James. The drop-in centre means that children can find the respite, support and care they need to build a life away from the streets. Thank you for making this possible.
