I’m a words person. When I read, it’s as if an entire picture is painted in my mind, coming alive word by word. But sometimes words aren’t enough. Sometimes the reality is too big for my mind to even begin to paint a true picture.
It’s at times like this that I really appreciate photography, capturing a moment that a thousand words couldn’t describe, going beyond the logical to an understanding on a purely human level.
This is why I loved our photography exhibition last week of the situation in Patongo, northern Uganda. I could never explain the mix of emotions in the faces of the children and young people there – the simultaneous hope and despair, the tumultuous transitions between the joy of being alive and deep emotional trauma – so I’m not even going to try.
