To mark Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating our fantastic volunteers – those who go out of their way to make a vital contribution to our work! We’re so grateful to have people like Karen, who, by contributing a few hours a week, make a real difference.
Karen has been volunteering with our fundraising team since February. Here’s what she had to say:
Tell us a bit about yourself
I live in Farnborough with my husband and our two teenage sons. For part of the week I teach a Year 5 class at a local junior school, a job that I really enjoy. In my spare time I enjoy walking with my family and our dog, Lola. A couple of years ago I joined a local running club and have been surprised how much I enjoy running when I get to have a chat at the same time!
What made you decide to start volunteering?
My children are getting older and more independent so for the first time in years I have a little time on my hands! I was interested in spending some time volunteering and when I started looking I was amazed at how many different opportunities are available.
What made you choose Chance for Childhood to volunteer with?
I feel that my children are incredibly lucky to have been born in this country, where they have wonderful opportunities available to them and can make choices about their future. When I read about the work that Chance for Childhood do to support some of world’s most vulnerable children, I felt that this was a charity that I would love to be able to support in some way.
What do you like about volunteering with Chance for Childhood?
It feels rewarding to spend a little of my time supporting this wonderful charity. It is a real contrast to my job as a teacher, so I get a chance to use and learn different skills. I have really enjoyed meeting new people and also getting an insight into how a charity works.
What top tips would you give to those thinking about volunteering?
The Volunteer North Hampshire site is a great place to start. It allows you to search for opportunities based on your interests, what activities would suit you and the time you have available. Even if you only have a little time to give, there are so many charities out there looking for support in so many different ways.
We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers to help us in our Farnborough office! Check out our latest volunteering opportunities to see how you can get involved. Or if you know someone who might be interested, share this article with them:
